Ethereal Visualizations of Graveyards in Cyprus
Documenting graveyards in Cyprus has been an integral part of my photographic practice for over six years. Photographing these spaces has always felt exciting and mysterious, with each visit offering something new to discover. In this particular photographic series, I reinterpret graveyards as a form of "No Man's Land," a space that defies conventional ownership and provokes deep existential reflection. The use of b&w imagery with an x-ray effect is an attempt to "reveal" the spiritual and philosophical dimensions of these spaces, encouraging viewers to question the very nature of graveyards. Parallel to this, notions of time and space are challenged, as the land becomes more abstract and unrecognizable. At first glance, the viewer might not be able to identify what is depicted and may need a second look to start making sense of the image. This effect creates room for a more unfiltered, emotional response. The photographs avoid literal representations of graveyards and their iconography, triggering a series of existential questions regarding ownership, vanity and of course death.
